Compendium — Sections

Documentation

Overview

Sections are the structural containers in Compendium. They form a collapsible tree in the left sidebar and organise documents into a logical hierarchy — chapters, topics, sub-topics, and so on. Every document lives inside a section. You can nest sections as deeply as your project needs.

The top of the tree is always the project root — named after your project. Everything else is a user-created section beneath it.

Creating a section

Top-level section

1In the left sidebar, click the Add Section (⎇) or + Branch button at the top of the tree
2Enter the section title in the dialog
3Click Save — the section appears in the tree under the project root

Sub-section (child of an existing section)

1Hover over the parent section row in the sidebar — action icons appear
2Click the + Add sub-section icon on that row
3Enter the section title
4Click Save — the new section is nested under the parent

Click any section in the sidebar to select it and load its document in the content area. The breadcrumb trail at the top of the content area shows the full path from the project root to the current section — click any breadcrumb link to jump directly to that level.

  • The Home icon in the breadcrumb navigates to the project root section
  • Sections with children show a collapse/expand chevron — click to toggle
  • The currently selected section is highlighted in the sidebar
  • Toggle the sidebar off or on with the Menu (☰) button in the breadcrumb bar

Editing a section

1Hover over the section row in the sidebar
2Click the pencil (Edit) icon that appears
3Update the section title or change the parent section
4Click Save — the tree updates immediately

Renaming a section does not affect the documents inside it. Changing the parent moves the section and all its children to the new location in the tree.

Reordering sections

Drag a section row up or down within the same level to change its display order. A visual indicator shows where the section will be dropped. Release to confirm the new position. The tree saves the order automatically.

Drag-and-drop reorders within the same parent level only. To move a section to a different parent, use Edit Section → Change parent.

Deleting a section

1Hover over the section row in the sidebar
2Click the delete (trash) icon
3A confirmation dialog appears — review the warning, then click Confirm

Deleting a section is permanent. All child sections and their documents are also deleted. This action cannot be undone from the UI.

Troubleshooting

The "Add Section" button is not visible

Section management requires edit access. Read-only users cannot add sections. If you have edit access and the button is still missing, ensure a project is selected and refresh the page.

I deleted a section by mistake

Section deletion is permanent. Contact your project admin — if the data still exists in a backup it may be restorable, but the platform does not have a built-in undo for section deletion.

I cannot move a section to a different parent

Use Edit Section to change the parent. Drag and drop only reorders within the same level — it does not change parent assignment.

The tree does not show my newly created section

The tree refreshes automatically after a section is created. If it does not appear, click the Refresh button in the sidebar or reload the page.

Archived sections are not visible in the tree

Archived documents are hidden by default. Open the Info Drawer (ⓘ icon) and toggle on "Show Archived Documents" to make them visible in the tree and search.
