Create a New Project

Projects

Overview

A project in Silverile is where your team's stories, sprints, defects, and members live. Each project belongs to a department in your company hierarchy and follows a methodology — Agile, Kanban, or Waterfall — that shapes how work is tracked and delivered.

Creating a project takes about two minutes. Once it's set up, you can import stories, invite team members, and start your first sprint straight away.

Who can create projects

You need the Add Projects permission for your company or department. If you don't see the create option, ask your Silverile administrator to grant it.

Step 1 — Open the new project form

There are three ways to get there:

From the project switcher

1Click the project name in the top navigation bar to open the project switcher
2Click Create New Project at the bottom of the list

From the dashboard

1Open your current project dashboard and click Create New Project in the project card

From the Org View page

1Open Org View from the left sidebar
2Locate the department you want the new project to belong to
3Right-click the department node and select Create Project from the context menu
4The new project form opens with the department pre-filled

All three methods open the same new project form.

Step 2 — Choose a project type

If your company has multiple project types configured, you'll see a Project Type dropdown as the first thing on the form. Select the type that fits your project — this controls which story types are available and may pre-set the methodology and sprint settings.

If your company only has one project type, this step is skipped automatically and the form opens directly on the details fields.

Step 3 — Fill in the project details

Fields marked required must be filled in before you can submit.

FieldRequiredNotes
NameYesUp to 35 characters. Must be unique within the department.
DepartmentYesThe company or business entity this project belongs to.
ManagerYesThe person responsible for this project. They receive an email on assignment.
MethodologyYesAgile, Kanban, or Waterfall. Kanban projects skip sprint settings.
Sprint DurationYes7 days, 14 days (default), 28 days, or calendar month.
Sprint Start DayNoOnly shown for Agile projects with weekly or bi-weekly sprints. Defaults to Monday.
Start DateYesWhen the project begins.
End DateNoOptional target end date. Must be on or after the start date.
TimezoneYesUsed for sprint boundaries and standup notifications.
DescriptionNoRich text overview of the project. You can add or edit this any time after creation.
Methodology, Sprint Duration, and Sprint Start Day are locked after the project is created. Set them carefully — you won't be able to change them later.

Step 4 — Choose story types

Story types define the category of work your project tracks. The following story types are available:

Story TypeBest for
Application DevelopmentSoftware feature development, sprints, and release tracking for application teams.
DatabaseDatabase design, schema changes, migration tasks, and data engineering work.
Project SupportSupport, maintenance, and operational work that falls outside feature development.

All story types are selected by default. Deselect any that don't apply to your project. At least one must remain selected.

You can adjust which story types are active after the project is created — go to the project dashboard and open the Story Types tab.

Step 5 — Create the project

1Review your entries — pay attention to Methodology and Sprint Duration since these can't be changed later
2Click Add Project
3A confirmation message appears: "Project [Type] — [Name] added successfully"
4Click OK to open your new project

After creation

Your new project opens on its dashboard. From here you can:

  • Add team members — open the Members tab and invite colleagues
  • Import stories — use the Import Stories button to upload from Excel or CSV
  • Create your first story — open the Stories tab and click Add
  • Set up teams — open the Teams tab to organise members into sub-teams
  • Configure environments — open the Release Environments tab to define deployment targets
  • Set up notifications — open the Notification Settings tab to configure standup alerts

Your project also appears immediately in the project switcher in the top navigation, so you and your team can switch to it at any time.

Troubleshooting

I don't see a "Create New Project" button

Project creation requires a specific permission. Ask your Silverile administrator to grant you the 'Add Projects' permission for your company or department.

The project name shows an error after I click Add Project

The name must be unique within the selected department. If a project with the same name exists there already, choose a different name or a different department.

I can't find the department I want

The Department field only shows company entities you have access to. If a department is missing, ask your administrator to grant access.

The Methodology or Sprint Duration fields aren't showing

These fields are hidden when your selected project type enforces a fixed methodology. Check the project type selection in the previous step.

No story types are available to select

Story types are tied to project types. If you see none, re-select your project type or ask your administrator to configure story types for that type.
